Our Grand God...

View of canyon from Desert View overlook.Last month Jane and I attended the Campus Ministers Conference in Phoenix. The girls stayed with my parents so we decided to add a side trip to the Grand Canyon. This would be Jane's frist time to see the canyon.

When we arrived in Flagstaff to rent our hotel room the people at the desk said the cost to enter the park was now $25. We had planned for an entry fee but not $25. We decided to eat dinner and make a final decision about the cost there.

As we ate, our waitress overheard our discussion and told us the toll booth closed at 7:00 pm and we could get in for free. We made the remaining 25 minute drive to the park and arrived just after 7:00 but the booth was still open.

Reluctantly, we turned around to head back toward Flagstaff. We had gone less than a mile and we decided that after all the time we spent getting here we may as well go in and see the Grand Canyon even if it cost $25. When we got back the toll booths were just closing up and the attendant stepped out and waved us on through.

Sometimes in the face of daily life we forget that we have a savior who truly understands us. He knows our hurts, our needs, and even our desires. Jesus said that if I, an imperfect human father, know how to give good gifts to my children, how much more does our Heavenly Father know and want to give us good gifts.

Sometimes these gifts are for our pleasure; like seeing the Grand Canyon. But even this is to His glory; revealing his desire for a personal relationship with all humanity.

I am convinced now more than ever that we serve a Grand God. He is powerful enough to carve out a magnificent and awesome canyon but sensitive enough to be touched by our weaknesses and desires.
